As a current, ongoing project spanning years, images in this series are an exploration of the cherished fantasy of the West as it contrasts with realities of land use, environmental and human exploitation, and commercial interests.

Long idealized as a promised land to which persons might escape to remake both identity and fortune, the West has been held up as the hallmark indicator of the American frontier spirit. By looking more deeply at less gilded aspects of this landscape, one can witness the current transformation and foundering of our definition of this country’s identity. Through hypocrisy, degradation, beauty, and irony, the western landscape tells us the story of cultural priorities. Reaching the limits of the Pacific Ocean, we must finally turn around to examine and cherish more closely our limits.
